Right? Helicopter Dicque was their “Lemonade” and got totally snubbed by the Academy. It had to be because of the lead single “Le Cocque”, it was in French and they weren’t ready. But their first jawn, “Tongue and Cheeks” is still my favorite.
Ah Le Cocque was such a beautiful song. I have to Google the lyrics every time I listen to it but it’s still a banger. I actually have it as my ringtone.
Tongue and Cheeks was good too. Has such a great throwback vibe. Protein Nut Milk was a bit experimental so there weren’t any true bops but the influence was felt. I mean it obviously inspired half these new artists now. They need to pay homage.
I’m saying, “24k Magic” and that last record Timberlake put out is heavily influenced by Protein Nut Milk. If “Open Them Lips (To Love)” didn’t come out, there would be no “That’s What I Like”. And every time I hear “What It Do (And By It, I Mean Dick)” off of Tongue and Cheeks, I’m transported back to a simpler time.

And I didn’t wanna say it, I really didn’t, but Beyonce totally copied “Swangin’ Thangs (You’ll Poke Your Eye Out)” video from Helicopter Dicque for Lemonade. I mean, she didn’t want Serena dancing in her video until she saw her throwing all that ass in a circle in Snatchbox’s. That whole video was golden. I’m not afraid to admit, I cried. Like a newborn baby. They are fucking icons, plain and simple.

Do you remember the classic ode to Biz Markie, “Nobody Beats The Jizz”? I will still stop what I’m doing and dance to it, it’s just that good. And the ballads make me tear up anytime they’re played. “The Snatch Symphony” is such a beautiful song and then having Misty Copeland dance in the video to it? Tears running down my face.
All classics! And the Maya Angelou spoken word intro to “Two in the Pink; One in the Stink” is the reason I became a writer. I did not know who I was until that song.
